NOKOMIS/BUTLER — The Nokomis Woman’s Club met on October 14 at the Nokomis City Park, then drove to Bremer Sanctuary in Butler, which is the Hickory Hills chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society.
Nancy and Bruce Redman, volunteers of the sanctuary, took everyone to the new pavilion and played some barred owl calls to see if they would answer. It was a rainy evening and they did not get a response. Nancy led everyone to the original barn. It has gone through an extensive renovation. It is available for public events and has a small museum, office, and kitchen area. She told of the early beginnings of the sanctuary.
The Bremer family would establish their 203-acre property in 1857. However, the Illinois Audubon Society would acquire the property in 1877. Moreover, there was a stipulation that it becomes a wildlife sanctuary.
There are five miles of hiking trails, two viewing platforms, a covered footbridge, and they have wagon rides. Nancy said there are 50 bluebird boxes that are checked weekly. They tabulate results and send them to the Illinois Bluebird Project, as well as the North American Bluebird Society. The sanctuary is open for hikers from dawn to dusk all year. The sanctuary maintenance comes entirely from volunteers.
President Sally Sides would call the meeting to order. Roll call answers came via naming your favorite bird. Reports from the secretary and treasurer were then read and approved.
Sally gave a report on the pop-up shop with the cinnamon roll sales.
The club will participate in the Halloween Trunk or Treat on October 30, with Margie Eisenbarth decorating her golf cart.
Members voted to donate $150 to Bremer Sanctuary.
The meeting adjourned. Lou Ann Bolte won the door prize.
