PEKIN — Rural Equality Project will bring Pekin Pride back to Mineral Springs Park on Saturday, Aug. 22, with a full day of music, entertainment, vendors and family-friendly activities at the Steven D. Skinner Bandstand.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and marks the second time in three years that Pride festivities have been held in Pekin. Organizers say they expect a larger crowd this year, along with a bigger entertainment lineup and more vendors.

Committee chair Zoey Carter said the first Pekin Pride event drew about 300 people and that organizers are hoping to welcome several hundred more this year.

“This is the second time we have held a Pekin Pride Festival here,” Carter said. “The first year we entertained around 300 people. This year we plan to entertain several hundred more with our larger, more varied entertainment line-up, and more booth vendors.”

The day will include a faith service, drag queen story hour, drag performances, and local vendors selling crafts and other goods.

Vendors listed for the festival include Southern Moon Crystals, Nothing Bundt Cake, Peoria PFLAG, Youth Outlook, the Pekin Library and Central Illinois Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In addition, the Rural Equality Project is planning a second Pride event on August 15 at Yesterday Bar & Grill. That event, which will be from 4-7 p.m., will feature raffles, games, and prizes. It will also include a chance for attendees to pie Carter.

The sponsors of the festival at the Friend level are Central Illinois Friends and nuEra. Rural Equality Project describes itself as a central Illinois nonprofit focused on inclusivity, advocacy, and community outreach.
