CONCORD — A fire devastated units of a condominium complex Monday afternoon in south St. Louis County.
In mere days before the Christmas holiday, smoke was visible from surrounding roads. Residents, onlookers, and first responders alike rushed to the scene of the Arthur Commons condominium complex at 9940 Arthur Lane in Concord.
Initial reports reveal that the fire burned through portions of the roof on the upper-right-hand side of the row of condo buildings. Also affected by the fire was a good portion of the second-floor landing. A re-creation of the events estimates that the fire started on or shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.
At least one individual had been carried away on a stretcher, but there did not appear to be any initial injuries.
Staff from Concord Animal Hospital were on the scene to help pets who had been stuck in the burning condos. One resident reported that his guinea pig was extracted by fire crews, but responders could not find his three cats. He resides on the other side of the building.
“I went to Schnucks to get cat food,” the resident said. “I was gone for fifteen minutes, and a whole half of the building is on fire.”
Details and the cause of the Arthur Commons fire are currently unknown at this time. The incident is being investigated by the Mehlville Fire Protection District.
This is a developing story.
