ST. CHARLES, Mo. — A man with ties to Montgomery County in Illinois faces theft charges in St. Charles, Mo., stemming from an incident last summer.
Dallas R. Langham, 43, of Hillsboro, faces charges by St. Charles County prosecutors of stealing collectible currency worth around $250,000 during a collector show in St. Charles in July. The charges were filed in county court on October 31.
The initial charge, which exceeds $25,000, is a Class C felony in the state of Missouri.
A probable cause statement from the St. Charles Police Department states that the alleged crimes occurred on July 19 as Langham and a coin vendor shared a hotel room with another vendor during a collectible currency show.
The alleged victim allowed Langham to share his room and even gave him a key. Langham was present when the victim stored the valuable coins and money in the room’s closet.
However, once the victim returned from dinner, his property was long gone, and the door suffered damage, which investigators found inconsistent with typical forced entry patterns.
Langham told police in questioning that he went to dinner and returned. He stated that he was only in the room for about 40 minutes before discovering the damage and the currency, according to the statement.
After agreeing to a polygraph test the following day, it was revealed that he was being deceptive.
During the investigation, police discovered meth in Langham’s vehicle, which lab tests confirmed as 0.9 grams.
Langham reportedly admitted to daily usage over the past year and confessed to previous thefts from vendors at other coin shows.
He also faces charges of the meth possession.
Prosecutors expressed concerns about Langham being a flight risk, noting his out-of-state residence and admitted history of theft from other vendors.
Langham was released on November 7 on a $50,000 bond after posting $5,000. Among the conditions of his release are to attend all court hearings set by the court, submit to all orders, judgments, and sentencing, a no-contact order with the victim, update the court on any change of address, and not commit any further offenses. Langham was ordered to house arrest and GPS monitoring. In addition, he was allowed to seek admission to drug rehabilitation within five days of release and provide proof within 24 hours. He is also prohibited from online gambling or entering any gambling facility.
Langham is set to appear in St. Charles County Circuit Court on January 9, 2025 at 9 a.m.
