WITT — On Tuesday, July 23, six members of Sewing for Missions met at the Witt United Methodist Church to deliver a truckload of finished children’s hospital gown to the Midwest Mission Distribution (MMDC) in Chatham. Transportation was provided by Jack and Nancy DeWerff of Nokomis.
The Sewing for Missions group was started in 2010 by Cheryl Randel of Witt. Randel had a vision to sew one hospital gown at a time and therefore make a difference in the lives of children around the World.
The Sewing for Missions group continues to sew children’s hospital gowns and outfits in the basement on Monday at 9:00 a.m. at the Witt United Methodist Church. This project has become an important ministry of the Witt United Methodist Church.
The delivery included 714 girls’ sizes 1,2,3 finished children’s hospital gowns. For boys sizes 2,3,4 a total of 136 finished gowns were delivered. Also included was two knit baby sweaters, 230 diapers, 62 kimonos, four pillowcase dresses, one serger, and 6 sewing machines.
The Midwest Mission Distribution Center does a final inspection of all the finished hospital gowns and will decide where they are most needed. They will be distributed to hospitals and orphanages for children to wear while there and take home with them when released.
To date, the Sewing for Missions Group has provided a grand total of 14,218 children’s hospital gowns, 1,034 kimonos, 123 sweaters, 2,004 flannel diapers, 41 boys mixed size shorts, 1,422 baby hats, 2,004 diapers, 1,989 baby quilts, 9 flood buckets with lids, 1 box of face masks, 1 box of reading material, 10 pair of scissors, 7 sergers, and 27 electric sewing machines and one treadle machine.
The Sewing for Missions group meets most every Monday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Witt United Methodist Church. Anyone is welcome to stop by and check out some of the sewing projects.
