WITT — Witt Volunteer Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on Friday, July 19 on East Mitchell Street.

At 2:09 p.m., firefighters from the department arrived on the scene of a structure fire in progress with reported flames showing. Due to the nature of the fire, automatic mutual aid was dispatched shortly after bringing in engine companies from the Fillmore and Nokomis Fire Protection Districts, as well as a rapid intervention team from the Litchfield Fire Department.

A combination of the large fire and manpower uncertainty would result in additional support being called in from the Raymond-Harvel and Coffeen Fire Protection Districts.

According to a release from the fire department, Engine 301 reported heavy fire on the A-side of the structure. A two-inch attack line was pulled to begin an exterior fire attack with a one-and-three-quarter-inch line pulled for additional suppression and exposure control. Water supply was established through a reverse lay from Nokomis Engine 701.

The fire was reported as under control as of 2:36 p.m. with the Illinois State Fire Marshal being called in to investigate the cause of the fire. The cause remains under investigation as of publication.

Witt Fire Department thanks their mutual aid partners for their quick response and willingness to help, including other assistance from the Witt Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, and Hillsboro Ambulance Service.

The call marks the fourth structure fire in the past two weeks, adding to a reportedly busy summer.
