MT. VERNON — A 45-year-old Mt. Vernon man charged with reckless homicide was ordered detained in the Jefferson County Jail after the court found he is likely a threat to the community.

Robert A. Lewis is accused of striking 62-year-old Thomas Taylor with his pickup truck Tuesday following a dispute between the two men in a Mt. Vernon alley. Taylor reportedly died as a result of the injuries he suffered in that incident.

Assistant State’s Attorney Julie Kozuszek submitted evidence to the court Friday of Lewis’ anger issues and drug use. Lewis was formally charged Thursday in Jefferson County Court with Class 3 felony reckless homicide and Class 4 felony leaving the scene of an accident involving death or injury.

Kozuszek also introduced evidence he was on court supervision at the time of his Tuesday arrest and that the state had filed to revoke that supervision.

Lewis pleaded guilty last year to misdemeanor speeding 35 miles per hour or more over the limit in exchange for a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving being dismissed.

The court agreed with the prosecution and Lewis was remanded into the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with a status hearing scheduled for March 13.
