Female resident found deceased in Assumption fire

An Assumption woman is deceased as a result of a structure fire on the 100 block of North Locust Street.

On Tuesday, September 21 at 1 p.m., Christian/Shelby 911 received a call regarding heavy smoke and flames from what was discovered to be 112 North Locust Street.

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene, discovering the structure was fully engulfed. Personnel were not able to rescue the occupant due to the building’s condition.

Agencies responding to the scene include Assumption Fire Department, Moweaqua Fire Department, Pana Fire Department, Tower Hill Fire Department, Owaneco Fire Department, and Taylorville Fire Department. Also responding were Christian County Emergency Management Agency and police departments from Assumption and Moweaqua. The Illinois State Fire Marshal Office was also on the scene.

After the fire was under control, personnel made their way into the residence and located a deceased female.

Her name is being withheld at this time pending notification of family.

An autopsy will be held Thursday in Bloomington.

Christian County Coroner Amy Calvert-Winans and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office are handling the investigation.
