Could elections in Illinois benefit from a change in how we vote?

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Fair Vote, a non-partisan election reform group, advocates for a move to ranked-choice voting. Under the system, voters have the ability to rank as many candidates as they want in order of preference. Geoffrey Cubbage, secretary of the Illinois Green Party, says an election reform like this already is a part of his party’s platform. He said ranked-choice could improve the system by eliminating the so-called “spoiler effect.” “It gives everybody the ability to vote for […]

Walmart drops in-house punishment for shoplifters

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (UPI) -- Retailer Walmart is ending an alternative to prosecution for shoplifting, the company said, that could put a larger burden on local police forces. The company is suspending its relationship with two companies offering anti-shoplifting educational programs. The programs, provided by Utah-based Corrective Education Co. and Turning Point Justice, have been part of an in-house punishment in which a first-time Walmart shoplifter could avoid criminal prosecution. The suspect could pay a fee of $400 or $500, and take an online […]
