China overtakes Japan as largest U.S. creditor with $1.1 trillion owed

BEIJING/WASHINGTON (UPI) -- China has once again become the United States' largest creditor, Treasury Department figures released Wednesday indicate. China sold off some of its U.S. Treasury bonds last year to prop up its own currency, the yuan, but its holdings of U.S. government debt have increased this year to $1.15 trillion, an increase of $44 billion since June.
