House passes stopgap bill to prevent government shutdown

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The House has passed a short-term spending bill to prevent the government from shutting down later this week when it was to run out of funds. The stopgap measure, known as a continuing resolution, passed 231-192 to keep money in government coffers until Dec. 20. Recipients of Social Security may notice an increase of their benefits for 2020, according to the SSA. A cost-of-living adjustment of 1.6 percent is set to be added to benefits payable to more than 63 million beneficiaries beginning in January 2020.
