Illinois lawmakers look to avoid FAA penalties amid jet fuel tax crackdown

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- After years of noncompliance, Illinois lawmakers are moving forward with legislation that would require local taxes on jet fuel go to aviation-related projects, not into local coffers. The bill has failed in previous years. If it becomes law, taxes on jet fuel would be sent back to local airports and aviation schools. Illinois and many home-rule municipalities, notably Chicago, taxed jet fuel and used it for non-aviation expenses. The Federal Aviation Administration said in 2015 that tax […]

$2 billion Illinois rail project falls behind high-speed targets

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Amtrak riders are still waiting for higher train speeds along the Chicago-to-St. Louis route. Officials promised travel at up to 110 mph along the line as part of a nearly $2-billion dollar project largely funded by Federal economic stimulus dollars awarded under then-President Barack Obama. Recent projections had trains reaching 90 mph on a portion of the trip in 2018, but the timetable now has been pushed into this year. Installing and testing new federally-mandated […]

However, drivers may be able to get some of that money back from the State of Illinois. The Illinois Department of Transportation handles claims for pothole-related vehicle damage on state highways, but spokeswoman Gianna Urgo warned that not all claims will be eligible for payouts. “The department evaluates each claim […]
