Report on criminal justice: 18-year-olds don’t belong in adult court

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (PNS) -- A new report puts some weight behind arguments that young adults should not be prosecuted in adult court in Illinois. The findings from the Juvenile Law Center confirmed youth incarceration rates have fallen in recent years. Officials are starting to recognize the developmental differences between adolescents and adults. However, incarceration rates haven't declined among young adults, ages 18 to 24. Goodjoint: Let's raise the age of juvenile court above 18 Katrina Goodjoint, staff attorney for the Juvenile Law […]

Three Chicago officers acquitted of coverup in Laquan McDonald shooting

CHICAGO (UPI) -- A judge found three Chicago police officers not guilty Thursday on charges that they covered up for officer Jason Van Dyke after he shot and killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in 2014. Cook County Judge Domenica Stephenson ruled that Detective David March, and officers Joseph Walsh and Thomas Gaffney were not guilty of official misconduct, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice in their probe into Van Dyke's killing of McDonald. "This court finds that the state has […]

OP-ED: Holiday shopping and the sales tax Scrooge

The average American will spend around $800 on gifts this Christmas. But making those holiday buys in Illinois will leave many families wishing they could get more bang for their buck. Illinois passed its first state sales tax – 2 percent on all retail goods – all the way back in 1933. It not only replaced revenue that came from the old statewide property tax, but brought in a lot of new money as well. Fast forward to today: Illinois’ […]

OP-ED: Two wrongs don’t make a right in ‘Fight for $15’ debate

The "Fight for $15" an hour is back in Illinois, although it's not likely to be much of a fight and this time there's a bit of a twist. Democratic Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker is telling anyone who will listen that he wants to gradually raise the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour starting in the first six months of his term that begins in January. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed the last legislative attempt to gradually raise the state's […]

Commentary: Illinois Family Institute continues campaign of ignorance on pot legalization

Kathy Valente from the Illinois Family Institute has yet again continued the organization's ignorance campaign on a pending Cook County resolution to legalize marijuana in the county. In a Letter To The Editor that Valente submitted to all media outlets on February 1 entitled "Avoiding a Dangerous Pot Hole", she and the Institute continues to prove how ignorant they truly are. With absolutely no regard for solid facts or evidence from other states, lawmakers are set to legalize and tax […]

Syverson says now is the time for Illinois to push forward on gaming expansion

SPRINGFIELD (INN) -- One state lawmaker says now is the time for Illinois to push forward on gaming expansion. State Senator Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, says a bill that would allow for up to six new casinos in the state already has passed the Senate and it’s simply waiting for the House to weigh in. “We just need the speaker to allow a vote in the House,” Syverson said. “The last two years he hasn’t allowed his members to vote on […]

This Christmas, property taxes are robbing the McCallisters

WINNEKTA (Heartland Newsfeed/Illinois Policy Institute) -- Since 1990, the owners of 671 Lincoln Avenue have paid more than $783,000 in property taxes when adjusting for inflation. It’s a robbery even Kevin McCallister couldn’t prevent. In the small Cook County village of Winnetka, Illinois, sits the filming site of John Hughes’ 1990 Christmas classic, “Home Alone.” Located in New Trier Township, the house is something of a local legend as it made Chicago-area news when it changed owners in 2012. But […]

More than 300 Chicago government employees receive layoff notices before Thanksgiving

CHICAGO (UPI) -- More than 300 government employees in Chicago learned they would lose their jobs just two days before Thanksgiving, due to budget cuts. Cook County commissioners voted unanimously for a $5.2 billion budget that required 321 public employees be cut, the Chicago Tribune reported. The lay-offs are expected to begin next month. County officials blamed the slimmed-down budget on the repeal of a penny per ounce soft drink tax that was repealed this year. "Laying off more than 300 of […]

McCaleb: Legislators break into song and dance when real fix is needed

(Illinois News Network) -- I've been called many things, but handy isn't one of them. When something around the house breaks, I usually take a look at the problem, dig through my toolbox, look some more, and then call someone to fix it. Don't get me wrong. I can change a lightbulb and even have replaced the battery in our smoke detector. But if something more complicated stops working – say, the washing machine – I don't have a chance on […]
