Manufacturer of ride that killed teen at Ohio State Fair says corrosion the cause

COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI) -- The manufacturer of a ride that malfunctioned at the Ohio State Fair and killed a teenager and injured several other people last month said the mishap was due to corrosion. KMG International, a Dutch-based company that rents out rides to fairs around the world, said in a statement released Sunday that an internal investigation found that "excessive corrosion on the interior of the gondola support beam dangerously reduced the beam's wall thickness over the years. This finally led to […]

Nissan workers in Mississippi reject bid to unionize

CANTON, Miss. (UPI) -- Nissan factory workers in Mississippi this week overwhelmingly struck down a bid to join the United Auto Workers union, capping a years-long campaign that drew national attention. Roughly 3,500 workers in the Canton, Miss., automobile plant rejected the measure by a 63-37 percent margin, USA Today Network reported. The campaign had been contentious. Some claimed Nissan intimidated its workers to vote against unionization and others said managers at the plant have given preferential treatment to white employees. Sen. Bernie […]

AUGUSTA, Maine (UPI) -- Maine will become the fourth state to raise the tobacco smoking age to 21, after lawmakers voted to override the governor's veto that would have kept the age at 18. Gov. Paul R. LePage derided the bill as "social engineering" and argued that if 18-year-old people are old enough to join the military, they should be allowed to smoke. "I'm not going to strap a gun to their shoulder and go fight a war if they can't […]
