Watch for signs of heat stress in livestock

With plenty of summer left to go, livestock producers are reminded to monitor animals and implement management practices to reduce the risk of heat stress. “We’ve had a couple spells of some high heat and high humidity and it doesn’t take very many of those days to cause some stress on the livestock,” Dan Shike, interim head of the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois told FarmWeek. Crops face mid-season battle with weeds and diseases

BLOOMINGTON (FarmWeekNow) -- Airplanes, ground rigs, and drones can be seen across the state at this point in the season as corn and soybean crops battle weed and disease pressure. “There are a lot of variables out there right now that everybody is trying to factor in,” FarmWeek CropWatcher Jeff Guilander told the RFD Radio Network. Wheat acres have the largest anticipated decline at 5% to 47 million acres, while corn acres are expected to decline 4% to 91 million […]

Scout for red crown rot in 2024

Red crown rot is expected to reappear in Illinois soybean fields this season. The disease was first confirmed in Illinois in 2018 and is an emerging issue for the top soybean producing state. Robert Bellm, a certified crop adviser with Brasse Farms Inc. in Madison County, encountered it in 2020 and continues to find it in new fields. “We don’t know if it’s actually expanding or if people are just becoming more aware of it,” he told FarmWeek. “I expect […]
