Taxpayers cover costs of bad pension fund investment return predictions

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- As municipalities across the state determine how to spend taxpayers' money for the next year, they’re looking at what to expect for pension fund investment returns. Bad predictions can mean big costs to taxpayers and, when estimated returns on city pension fund investments are too generous, taxpayers have to pay up. The city of Springfield’s estimated returns were off enough to require an additional $600,000 the city didn’t budget for. That’s expected to impact other […]

IDOC sees spike in alcohol brewed by inmates

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- The number of inmates in the Illinois state prison system caught making illegal alcohol has increased this fiscal year, and it might have to do with a drink going to prison facilities legally. Lindsey Hess, a spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Corrections, said during the previous fiscal year, there were 83 reports of homemade alcohol being made in IDOC facilities. So far this fiscal year, which began July 1, there have already been 71 […]

Illinois officials react to FCC’s net neutrality vote

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- While Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan promises an appeal, an Illinois U.S. representative says lifting Federal net neutrality rules will hold internet service providers accountable by fostering more competition. The FCC voted to repeal net neutrality regulations Thursday 3 to 2. Madigan and other state AGs followed up with a promise to appeal. She said the move “undermines the public interest by putting our free and open internet at risk.” Thursday’s vote, Madigan’s office said in […]

CHICAGO (Illinois News Network) -- The fast-paced shopping season that accompanies the holidays means more potential opportunities for criminals. That’s according to the Better Business Bureau, which is warning Illinois residents about the annual spike in scam attempts this time of the year. “I’ve been doing this for 30 years and there always seems to be an uptick, because it appears that many people are desperate this time of the year,” said Steve Bernas, president and CEO of Better Business […]

In spite of tax hike, ratings agency eyes change that could junk Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Illinois could be on the fast track to a junk credit rating, despite lawmakers assuring that a tax hike in July would keep the state from the infamous designation. “If we don’t get this done we will become the first state in the history of the United States of America to be in junk bond status,” state Rep. Mike Unes, R-East Peoria, said this summer. He and several other Republicans joined Democrats in overriding Gov. […]

Experts: Democratic candidates for governor float unworkable, expensive healthcare ideas

CHICAGO (Illinois News Network) -- Several Democratic candidates for Illinois governor are floating ideas they say will improve Illinois’ healthcare outcomes, but critics of the various plans say the ideas are unworkable and expensive. Billionaire J.B. Pritzker said in a campaign video he wants a new program called IllinoisCares. “We should be focused on expanding affordable healthcare, not eliminating it,” Pritzker said, criticizing the Trump administration and congressional Republicans’ attempts at dismantling the Affordable Care Act. “That’s why I have […]

Flu season has arrived in force in some Illinois communities

LITCHFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Illinois is not escaping the flu outbreak that has swept across parts of the country. The Illinois Department of Public Health does not track flu cases, just the number of people who are hospitalized. So it's up to local public health departments to paint the picture of Illinois' early flu season, and the picture isn't pretty. Litchfield schools, in Montgomery County, canceled classes last week because so many students and teachers were out sick. Montgomery County Public […]
