Rix Quinn’s Minute Story: The idea of business
todayAugust 7, 2019 84
Whoever came up with the idea of business must have been a genius. Without it, we would probably have no money, no banks, no stores, and – worst of all – no fashion.
Business is likely as old as the first person who wanted to trade one thing for another.
One Neanderthal approached a neighbor, asking, “How about me trade you this fine milk cow for your cranky goat?”
The second man misunderstood…and swapped his brother for a cow. But he also learned the value of exchanging goods and services.
As people gathered together in villages for mutual support, they developed skill specialties. A baker baked bread. A hatter made hats. A cobbler made shoes…or maybe he also made pies.
Later, the first print advertisements appeared on ancient parchment. Scientists who unearthed these scrolls found large rectangular chunks of manuscript missing.
Those missing pieces were humankind’s earliest “coupons.”
So, thanks to business, writing, and advertising, we humans now know much more than those generations who lived before us. And even better, today we can send silly videos to complete strangers.
