PAGE, Ariz. (UPI) — Authorities in Arizona found the body of a missing 14-year-old girl hundreds of feet below Horseshoe Bend overlook.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said the unidentified teen was found dead near the bottom of the rock formation near Page, Ariz., on Monday night after she was last seen at about 2 p.m. while visiting from San Jose, Calif., with her family.
Her parents reported her missing at about 4 p.m. Monday and CCSO Search and Rescue teams, along with the Department of Public Safety Air Rescue out of Flagstaff found her body 700 feet below the overlook after conducting a helicopter search of the area later in the evening and visually confirmed she was dead.
Crews were unable to continue the search that night and returned to recover the body the next day.
The girl’s body was taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff and an initial investigation determined the cause of death was an accidental fall.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing and the Medical Examiner will continue to review the case.
