Delinquent water bills focus of Coalton’s July board meeting

COALTON (Heartland Newsfeed) — Business items were quite sparse, but the Coalton Village Board did their best to go through what business they had on the agenda during their meeting on Wednesday, July 11.

In the absence of village president Rick Cearlock and village clerk Kay Cook, trustees Steve Kimbro and Steve Lee presided over the meeting as president pro tem and clerk pro tem respectively.

Water superintendent Tom Gonet reported that the issues regarding water and sewer are beginning to level off.

Water infiltration checks were requested by properties owned by Lukas Jachino and Judy Johnson, as well as a request by the new owner of the former Simonton property as 5^th and Haller to have a culvert installed to divert water.

Treasurer Sandy Jachino reported that she didn’t have to transfer money to the sewer fund as requested in the June meeting, noting there was enough funds to cover the bill.

Jachino presented a list of chronic and excessively delinquent customers to Gonet, stating that water service needs to be connected for delinquent water bills nearing or has exceeded a past due balance of $300.

In additional business:

• The minutes from the June meeting were approved.
• Gonet mentioned that the property owned by John Carpenter appears to be abandoned with a van partially parked on the street with unlicensed vehicles in the driveway. The condition of the house and yard have been found to present serious health and safety issues to neighboring residents and the board will be in contact with the Carpenters for issue resolution.
• The water report and bills for June were approved.
• Jachino noted that the audit reports from Patton and Company were nearly ready. The treasurer report was also approved.
• A request for a building permit was presented by trustee Mike Havera via request from Don and Julie Sisk, noting the request is for an in-ground pool. The permit was approved.
• Additionally noted was a conversation between Havera and Sisk regarding the demolition of the house on the former Battles property located on Fairmount Street then paying cash for the remaining asking price, in which the board agreed with the proposal and will put the terms into a contract that both parties can agree to.
• Trustee Rod Eller reported that the new signs for the village park were nearly ready for pickup.

With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.

In addition to Kimbro, Lee, Gonet, Jachino, Havera and Eller, trustees Tom Detmers and Mary Speier were also present in the meeting.
