524a First Time in Italy; Duck Season in Gascony Rick Steves
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Madison County and much of the St. Louis region.
The warning takes effect at noon Sunday, August 9, and remains in place until 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 12. Forecasters expect heat index values as high as 109 degrees.
The warning covers Madison, St. Clair, Monroe, Clinton, Washington and Randolph counties in Illinois. It also includes St. Louis and several surrounding counties in Missouri.
The National Weather Service warned that extreme heat and humidity can sharply increase the risk of heat-related illness. Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible and avoid direct sun exposure.
People who work or spend time outdoors should schedule strenuous activity for early morning or evening. They should also take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations.
Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles. Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion should move to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency; call 911.
The warning marks the third extreme heat warning this summer for Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Alton and other Madison County communities. The first was issued June 27, followed by another warning July 26.
Residents in the St. Louis metropolitan area can find information about cooling centers or energy assistance by calling the United Way of Greater St. Louis at (800) 427-4626. Landline callers may also dial 211. Cool Down St. Louis is available at (314) 241-7668.
