We'll See About That with Ron Cey Episode 157 Leave Tom Hardy Alone! Ron Cey
QUINCY — The annual classic known as the Quincy Shootout will be operating under an abbreviated schedule due to inclement winter weather.
Don’t fret – there will be games tipping off on Friday under a scaled-down schedule. Games will be tipping off at different times from Blue Devil Gym, The Pit, and John Wood Community College.
Tournament organizer Eric Stratman announced late Thursday that the event will not take place on Saturday, factoring in freezing temperatures and the looming winter storm expected to hit the region.
“Well, not the news I want to break, but due to a combination of extreme cold, snow, and ice across the country, all Saturday games are cancelled,” Stratman said on social media. “While we are disappointed, we understand that safety is a priority. Thank you to our community for always being supportive.”
The Shootout began in 2018, a mainstay for the third weekend of January. Except for 2021, the event was an annual fixture. However, the 2021 event did not occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The shootout traditionally features some of the nation’s best high school boys’ basketball programs. Initially, there were five of the top 25-ranked teams that were to participate. The top 25 school ranking comes from the ESPN SportsCenter Next national poll.
However, as the weekend’s weather forecast changed, travel concerns grew. Teams started notifying Stratman and Quincy High School administrators that they would be unable to make the trip. Two of those teams made that intention known on Wednesday, with several others making that decision on Thursday. This would force the decision to cancel the Saturday portion of the event.
The National Weather Service has two active alerts for the region: a Cold Weather Advisory that went into effect overnight and runs through Monday, and the Winter Storm Warning set to go into effect at midnight local time.
The winter weather warning covers most of the south-central United States, stretching into the mid-south region.
Two games in an offshoot event, the Quincy Showcase, were played Thursday night at JWCC’s Student Activity Center. Two are currently set to tip off Friday night. The Showcase features Nike EYBL teams.
Blue Devil Gym and The Pit will also host two games apiece on Friday night.
As of publication, there have been no additional cancellations.
