MONTICELLO, Mo. — Scammers impersonating staff of a northeastern Missouri sheriff’s department have been calling relatives of individuals currently held at the Lewis County Jail.

“The scammers represent themselves as a member of the Sheriff’s Department calling to inform them the inmate can be released on bond,” the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department (LCSD) said in the advisory. “They then stated the family member needed to provide $500 for a personal monitoring device. The scammers then provided a false telephone number.”

LCSD officials stated that when an inmate is assigned an ankle monitor before release, a probation officer will reach out to make arrangements.

Individuals receiving such a call should seek clarification by calling jail staff at (573) 767-5287.
