CAHOKIA HEIGHTS — Multiple people, including a firefighter, were injured Saturday in a three-vehicle crash involving a Cahokia Heights fire truck on Illinois Route 3.
The crash occurred at about 1:10 p.m. near the intersection of Route 3 and East Fifth Street, according to the Cahokia Heights Fire Department. The department’s truck was responding to a call at the time.
Fire officials said the truck was traveling south on Route 3 when two northbound vehicles collided. Both vehicles then crossed into the southbound lanes and struck the responding fire truck.
The impact caused the fire truck to roll over. One firefighter was injured, and the occupants who were hurt in the crash were taken to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment.
Authorities have not released the number of people injured or their conditions. The Cahokia Heights Fire Department has not identified what caused the collision between the two northbound vehicles.
The department said Illinois State Police are leading the active investigation. Fire officials said they will not speculate about the circumstances or contributing factors while the investigation continues.
Traffic was diverted at Water Street after the crash. The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
The Cahokia Heights Fire Department thanked the law enforcement, fire, EMS and other emergency personnel who responded to the scene.
