TAYLORVILLE — Christian County has reported its first West Nile virus-positive mosquito sample of the 2026 season, the Christian County Health Department said Wednesday. The mosquitoes were collected July 20 in Taylorville.

The positive sample comes as mosquito activity continues to rise across central Illinois. Champaign County would report positive batches earlier this week. State health officials say no human West Nile cases have been confirmed in Illinois so far this year.

Warm, humid weather can create ideal conditions for mosquitoes, increasing the need for public health surveillance during the summer months. Monitoring helps officials spot virus activity early and alert residents before the risk grows.

“Our environmental health staff conducts mosquito surveillance throughout the season. We can identify West Nile Virus activity early and keep the public informed,” Public Health Administrator Dr. Chad Anderson said. “This surveillance, combined with community efforts to reduce mosquito breeding and prevent bites, is an important part of protecting public health.”

Health officials say residents can reduce their risk by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and removing standing water around homes. The Christian County Health Department says it will continue testing mosquitoes throughout the county. They are encouraging residents with questions to contact their local health department.
