Rodeo sports are dangerous—that’s where the thrill comes from! However, if you’re getting ready to do some wrangling in the arena, it pays to know some basic safety. Below, we review how to best avoid injury during rodeo sports.
Your gear does more than just make you look sharp in the arena; it’s vital for your safety. For one, have sturdy boots that hook well into stirrups. A glove is a good idea to prevent rope burn on your lassoing hand. For your vest, get one that absorbs shock in case you get stomped on. You’ll be wearing jeans, so make sure you break in your rodeo jeans if they’re new—stiffness in this area might compromise your safety. And though a helmet isn’t regulation, it’s one of the best pieces of protective gear you can don. Wear one!
Rodeo sports demand strength, precision, and agility, all of which come with much practice. Overconfidence is a ticket to disaster, so don’t make the mistake of underpreparing.
Work on your riding technique with a mentor or instructor who can improve your form and identify bad habits. You should also improve your balance and reflexes so you don’t fall off the saddle at the first jerk and can move out of the way of incoming harm.
Finally, get to know the creatures in the ring. Become super familiar with their behavior, triggers, habits, and so forth so that you can predict and prepare for sudden movements.
Rodeo sports are no joke physically. You must have exceptional core and arm strength, as well as established muscles throughout your whole body. So hit up the gym and make sure you’re ready to pull out all the stops on tournament day.
But before you enter the arena, warm up with some light exercise and dynamic stretching. This will loosen everything up and make you less prone to avoidable injury.
The adrenaline rush of the arena can make pushing your boundaries seem like a great idea. But knowing when to step back is critical. Ignoring signs of fatigue or skipping medical checkups increases your vulnerability to serious harm. Listen to your body and give yourself adequate time to rest and recover. A smart rider knows when to sit out.
Rodeo sports are as dangerous as they are exciting. By knowing how to best avoid injury, you can enjoy the sport with more peace of mind and maybe save yourself a costly medical bill. Ride strong. Ride safe. See you in the arena!
