HILLSBORO — Established party candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties interested in running for county offices to be nominated or elected in the March 19, 2024 primary may now receive petitions from the office of Montgomery County Clerk Sandy Leitheiser.
The circulation period begins Tuesday, September 5. The filing period for nominating papers is from November 27 to December 4.
County offices to be nominated in the March primary include State’s Attorney, circuit clerk, and coroner. In addition, there are seven county board seats for full four-year terms, and an unexpired two-year term for one of the county board positions.
The two parties will also be electing precinct committee persons in the primary. Those petitions are also available through the County Clerk’s office.
Outside of county offices, the primary will also determine nominees for President, Congress District 15, Illinois Senate District 55, Illinois State Representatives, and any potential judicial vacancies.
Libertarian Party pursuing a lawsuit over denied primary
Legal action is pending by the Libertarian Party of Illinois, which was established per the statewide replacement clause of the Illinois Election Code. Attorney General candidate Dan Robin received 5.29% of the countywide vote in 2022. If a preliminary injunction is granted, Libertarians will have to collect less than 15 signatures for countywide, and less than 10 signatures for countywide and precinct committee persons. Otherwise, they will need to petition for the general election instead.
Information on the 2024 elections are available
The 2024 general election will be on Tuesday, November 5.
Anyone requiring further information about the upcoming elections is encouraged to contact Leitheiser’s office. Her office is inside the Historic Courthouse in downtown Hillsboro. It is open Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.. Her office can also be contacted via email at sandyl@montgomerycountyil.gov or by calling (217) 532-9530.
