(Heartland Newsfeed) — Hold on to those assumptions about the XFL being gone forever. A suspension of team operations began March 20 following Week 5. Additionally, an indefinite suspension of league operations began on April 10 following an announcement. This would lead to staff contract terminations as a result.
The league and parent company Alpha Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, which allows for the restructuring of both operations. The filing also opens up the opportunity to purchase the league, with expressed interest from WWE chairman Vince McMahon.
Interesting developments have come forth Thursday, based on a report from XFL Newsroom’s Stephan Rachuk. The report references a Forbes article stating that aspiring sports moguls have shown interest in purchasing the league. Additionally, these individuals are speaking with investment banker and former NFL player Andrew Kline about their interest.
Kline comments on the interest brought forth to purchase the league.
Kline adds that neither he nor Park Lane is working on anything regarding the buying interests. However, Kline mentions that there is no interest if there is no billionaire to take McMahon’s place.
Kline adds that had McMahon had a full commitment to the XFL, the league “could have survived COVID-19 and much worse.”
Forbes senior contributor Jonathan Berr was able to reach out to Kline, but there was no mention of potential XFL buyers.
According to Kline, he believes there may be a way for both leagues to co-exist should the NFL decide to purchase the league. As a result, this would turn the league into a player developmental league similar to MLB‘s Minor League Baseball and the NHL‘s farm system.
These developments bring forth some promising news to fans hoping the league continues to exist. It’s too soon to tell if these are serious requests. Should league operations resume under new ownership, it’ll be nothing like the product that took two years for McMahon and Alpha Entertainment to build.
