State lawmakers consider pension changes

SPRINGFIELD (Capitol News Illinois) — Changes that would make Illinois pension systems compliant with Social Security by improving benefits for government employees hired since 2011 could be on the table when lawmakers return to Springfield in January.   The General Assembly passed legislation in 2010 to create a second tier of state pension benefits in hopes of reducing long-term liabilities. But the latest benefits structure for employees entering the government workforce after 2010, known as Tier 2, has raised concerns about […]

Illinois lawmaker calls clawback in COVID-19 grant program ‘abuse of power’

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) – The first public hearing of the Restore Illinois Collaborative Commission focused on grants of federal dollars the Pritzker administration is administering to businesses. But one aspect of the program was labeled “abuse of power” by a commission member. Tuesday’s hearing also gave the public a glimpse of what Republicans have characterized as short and unproductive meetings. The hearing lasted about 70 minutes with about half the time for questions from lawmakers. The other half was […]

Madigan doesn’t have enough votes for another term as Speaker, Democrats say

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- More Illinois House Democrats have said they won’t support Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan for another term. Every two years, the Illinois House votes for speaker; 60 votes are needed. The office manages how the House operates. Madigan (D-Chicago) has held that spot for all but two years since 1983. He recently has been implicated in several federal indictments against other people but hasn’t himself been charged with a crime. He maintains his innocence. State Rep. […]

More Illinois Democrats take aim at Madigan

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) – Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) said he’s not going anywhere despite members of his own party saying it’s time for him to step down as party leader. State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego) is making a bid to replace Madigan as speaker when the next term of the Illinois House begins in January. She also said he shouldn't be leading the Democratic Party of Illinois anymore. “The Democratic Party cannot be defined as the party […]

COMMENTARY: Threats of violence have no place in politics

(Heartland Newsfeed) -- The lame duck session of the Illinois General Assembly got incredibly ugly Wednesday during discussion regarding overriding a bill veto. A bill which would increase the cap on tort lawsuit payouts from its current $100,000 to a cap of $2 million was placed under an amendatory veto by outgoing Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. During debate in the veto override, in which legitimate financial concerns were made by Rep. Peter Breen (R-Lombard) were later mocked by Rep. Stephanie […]

Republican sponsor of Ill. bump stock ban insulted bill remains in committee

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- The Democrat-controlled Illinois legislature passed up an opportunity to approve a bipartisan and gun-rights group-supported bill to ban a controversial firearm add-on, and it’s unlikely they’ll act on anything soon. In the aftermath of last month’s Las Vegas mass shooting where the shooter used bump stock devices to accelerate the rate of fire for semiautomatic rifles, killing 58 and injuring hundreds, the Illinois House overwhelmingly voted down a measure from state Rep. Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) […]
