Illinois congressional delegation to shrink after 2020 Census

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Continued population loss means Illinois will have to say goodbye to one at least one of its 18 congressional representatives after the 2020 Census. Election Data Services recently released its annual projections of which states will gain and lose U.S. Representatives at the next turn of the decade. The projections show Illinois’ 18th Representative will almost certainly be removed and given to another state, said Kimball Brace. Other states projected to lose seats include Alabama, California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, […]

Kansas Sen. Roberts announces retirement in 2020

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Longtime Republican Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts said Friday he will not seek re-election in 2020. Roberts' announcement follows a number of other politicians in both chambers who've decided recently to leave immediately, or at the end of their terms. "I am announcing I will serve the remainder of this term as your senator, fighting for Kansas in these troubled times," Roberts wrote in a Facebook post. "However, I will not be a candidate in 2020 for a […]

Trump would ‘absolutely consider’ delay on government shutdown

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The White House and congressional negotiators are considering a bill that would delay a government shutdown after the death of former President George H.W. Bush. President Donald Trump said Saturday that if approached by members of Congress he would likely grant a request to push the deadline back, while funeral plans for Bush, whose body is set to lie in state at the Capitol, are being completed. GUEST EDITORIAL: Why Indiana voters should vote Brenton

As I engage with voters on the campaign trail, I hear over and over again, “Why should I vote for you?” I always welcome the opportunity to share my beliefs and Libertarian philosophies about freedom and liberty. As your senator from Indiana, I will demand a balance budget. I will end deficit spending. I will stop politicians from taxing us all into the grave and beyond. I will work to roll back and eliminate every program that is not authorized […]

Early votes could push midterm turnout above 50 percent

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- More than 35 million people cast an early vote or absentee vote for the 2018 elections, an increase of more than 58 percent from 2014, preliminary data indicates. The midterm elections are seeing an unusually high number of early voters -- early voting in 27 states alone total more than totaled early votes nationwide for 2014 -- which likely means a historic boost to overall voter turnout for 2018. Midterm elections have historically low turnout numbers, rarely […]

Johnson considering run for U.S. Senate as a Libertarian

SANTA FE (Heartland Newsfeed) -- A former New Mexico governor is considering a run for U.S. Senate as a Libertarian in November's general election. Following a June primary that resulted in not enough votes to ballot-qualify and recounts that didn't help, the Libertarian Party of New Mexico is seeking a way to retain their major party status. That may very well likely happen should Gary Johnson choose to run. Johnson, a former two-term Republican governor, ran for president three times […]
