SPRINGFIELD (Capitol News Illinois) — An Illinois House committee will investigate actions by Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Urbana) following her indictment on 10 federal charges this week. A group of 11 House Republicans filed a petition on Friday to create a special investigating committee, a sparingly used process laid out in House rules that can be initiated by any three members, regardless of party. The body, which by rule has its members appointed by the legislative leaders, is expected to explore […]

Both the governor’s budget office and the General Assembly’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability revised revenue projections for the current year and fiscal year 2027 down by less than 1%. While the change is small and generally […]

Illinois swipe fee law survives first legal challenge

CHICAGO (Capitol News Illinois) — A first-in-the-nation law that would prohibit banks and credit card companies from charging swipe fees on tips and taxes survived a major hurdle in court Tuesday, but opponents vow it will not be the last challenge. Financial institutions, including the Illinois Bankers Association and Illinois Credit Union League, filed a lawsuit against the Interchange Fee Prohibition Act in late 2024, arguing it would create an overly complex and burdensome payments system for debit and credit card purchases. Graduated income tax in Illinois remains political longshot

SPRINGFIELD (Capitol News Illinois) — When a progressive Chicago alderperson scolded Gov. JB Pritzker in November over his opposition to Mayor Brandon Johnson’s failed proposal to tax large corporations $21 per employee, Illinois’ billionaire chief executive was quick with a retort defending his progressive bona fides. “What we need is a progressive income tax, a graduated income tax in this state,” Pritzker told Chicago Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez, a democratic socialist who confronted him following a Veterans Day commemoration in Little […]
