Body armor is often used in combat situations to protect wearers against firearm projectiles and explosive fragments. This makes it perfect for law enforcement, since officers often don’t know what they’re going to encounter on a regular basis.
The body armor levels worn by law enforcement are generally determined by their operations in the field. Patrol officers, undercover agents, and SWAT teams have fundamentally different needs, which directly influences their choice of body armor.
Patrol officers are generally trained law enforcement units tasked with keeping the peace and preventing illegal activities. From writing tickets to directing traffic, patrol officers perform the essential duties that help keep communities safe.
In some cases, patrol officers may have to make domestic calls, apprehend dangerous criminals, or respond to shootings. Because of these dangers, most are required to wear bullet-proof vests while in the line of duty. They mostly wear level IIIA body armor but can supplement it with helmets, plates, and other equipment if necessary.
While patrol officers generally work out in public, undercover agents are often involved with more covert operations. This means they must be able to maintain their secrecy, even while wearing protective gear. Items that can be concealed under everyday clothing are ideal.
Undercover agents are tasked with gathering evidence to aid in the conviction of criminals. The job often puts them in harm’s way, meaning they still need some type of body armor to protect them from gunshots and close-range ballistics. In such cases, they usually employ level IIIA covert vests.
Some situations are too high-risk for officers not trained in more advanced combat capabilities. SWAT teams are specialized units that police agencies can call upon to perform high-risk operations. From serving warrants to raiding barricaded structures, they’re often placed directly in harm’s way while in the field.
SWAT teams need the best tactical gear for police officers. SWAT officers usually wear full coverage plating that helps to protect their arms, throat, and groin. This generally includes level IV plating, which helps to protect them against high-powered rifles and armor-piercing bullets.
Most law enforcement officers face some type of threat while on the job. Wearing the necessary protective equipment can help to alleviate some of the risks.
The various body armor levels worn by police officers help them tailor their gear to the situation, allowing them to keep the peace.
