Rule number one: a home office should never resemble or feel like a cubicle. Even when employees try and add plants and decorative picture frames, a cubicle still feels cold and impersonal. A home office is a place to conduct business, but it should still reflect your style and taste. Check out these finishing touches to add to your home office.
A bookshelf in a home office simply makes sense. Sure, it can go in other places in your home, but it looks the best in the office. It adds an appealing aesthetic to the entire room, especially if you curate it. Don’t go for the bare minimum and place simple paperbacks on the shelves.
Consider organizing the books by color to give a little more pop to the room. It doesn’t need to reflect a rainbow, but grouping by color makes the display feel more deliberate. Try placing a small stack of books horizontally to elevate a decorative bowl or another object. Add a few picture frames, pieces of art, and vases too.
Every home office needs a fun corner. Think back to a time when remote work was a luxury and not an expectation. People would go into the office and leave their cubicles to visit the break room, water cooler, or lounge area. Your home office deserves the same treatment.
And you don’t want to travel outside the room because you may feel tempted to stay out there. Create a fun corner or lounge area off to the side. Place a love seat, warm blankets, and plush pillows in it. Keep your iPad, Kindle, or other gadgets there to take a quick break from the workday when you need it.
It’s a common trend to add a rug inside a home office. Rugs really spruce up a place and make a room feel cozier. However, you can’t simply place any rug inside a home office. It needs to be a special type of rug.
A home office is the perfect place for a shag rug. Shag rugs get matted easily, so you should place them in a room with low foot traffic. The only person going in and out of your office is you. Place the rug in the fun corner or directly beneath your desk. It will feel so good removing your shoes or socks and rubbing your bare feet all over that shag.
Wallpaper is the best finishing touch. Much like the shag rug, it’s making a comeback. The walls make up a large amount of your space. Therefore, you need to take full advantage of it. Plain white walls sometimes feel cold.
Modern wallpaper is easy to put up and take down if, at some point, you choose to change it in the future as well. Wallpaper gives the room a fresh and creative look.
Add these finishing touches to your home office so that you always have a smile on your face when you work on bringing home the bacon.
