CARBONDALE –Â The Southern Illinois University Saluki women’s soccer team (1-1-1) played Kansas City to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at home.
“I thought it was a good match between two committed teams,” head coach Graeme Orr said. “I thought we started slowly, but great credit to the girls for recovering from adversity.”
In the early minutes of the match, the Salukis conceded a penalty to the Roos. Caijah Anderson stepped up for Kansas City, but hit the bar to keep the score at 0-0 in the fourth minute.
A few minutes later, a scramble in the box would lead to Kansas City’s Kayda Kamolz finding the back-of-the-net in the seventh minute to give the Roos an early lead.
Southern Illinois would find an answer later on in the first half through Kaitlin DuCharme. After a foul by the Roos, DuCharme stepped up to take the free kick and hit it into the top right corner to level the score. The goal was the graduate student’s second of the season.
“The goal was a phenomenal strike,” Orr said. “I was really impressed that she showed composure when we didn’t show enough of that tonight. I think we can improve on that.”
The score would remain 1-1 for the remainder of the match. SIU’s best chance in the second half came off of a 61st minute effort by Sam Dodd from outside the penalty area, forcing a save to the Kansas City goalkeeper’s left.Â
Ary Lougher made seven saves in the draw, following an eight-save performance in SIU’s last match at IUPUI last Sunday.
Up next for the Saluki squad is another home match on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Southeast Missouri State at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex.
