It’s true that most bees you see look more-or-less the same. But did you know a hive is home to several different types of bees, from the queen who lays eggs to the workers who gather food? Each type has its own place within colony life.
Here’s what you need to know about the roles of bees in a hive and the jobs they perform.
A honey bee colony generally has one queen, and her primary job is reproduction. She lays the eggs that develop into the next generation of bees, which allows the colony to replace workers as older bees die.
After mating early in adulthood, the queen stores sperm inside her body and uses it to fertilize eggs throughout her life. Fertilized eggs develop into female bees. Unfertilized eggs develop into male drones. During productive periods, a healthy queen may lay well over a thousand eggs in a single day.
Her presence also affects the colony through pheromones. Workers spread these chemical signals through contact, allowing bees throughout the hive to register that a queen is present.
Worker bees are all-female members of the colony that typically don’t lay eggs. But because workers are female, rare queenless colonies develop laying workers after the queen’s pheromones fade. Their unfertilized eggs develop into drones, which doesn’t replace the missing worker population. When this happens, the colony requires requeening.
A worker bee’s role within a hive changes as she ages. Most worker bees move through several jobs during adulthood rather than spending their entire lives on one task. Younger workers remain inside the hive, where their bodies are suited to brood care and comb work. Older workers gradually move toward jobs near the entrance before beginning trips outside the colony.
Nurse bees are young workers that care for developing brood. During this stage, glands in their heads produce nutrient-rich secretions that larvae need during early development.
Very young larvae receive royal jelly before their diets change as they grow. A larva destined to become a queen continues receiving royal jelly in larger amounts, which influences its development into a reproductive female rather than a worker.
Nurse bees spend much of their time moving among brood cells and feeding larvae according to age. Their work keeps new generations developing while older workers handle tasks farther from the center of the hive.
Some worker bees stay close to the queen and form a small group around her. These attendants feed her and groom her while she moves across the comb laying eggs.
Their contact with the queen serves another purpose. As attendants touch her, they pick up her pheromones and spread those chemical signals to other workers. This gives bees throughout the colony information about the queen’s presence and reproductive condition.
The group around her changes as workers move in and out of the attendant role. The queen receives continuous care without relying on the same individual bees throughout her life.
Young worker bees also spend part of adulthood producing wax. Glands on the underside of the abdomen release thin wax scales, which workers soften and shape into honeycomb.
Building comb takes energy, so wax production is closely connected with the colony’s food supply and growth. When bees need more room, fresh comb provides new cells that support the expanding colony.
Those cells serve different purposes depending on their location. Some hold developing brood, while others receive food brought back by foragers. The hexagonal structure lets bees create a large amount of usable storage area from the wax they produce.
Guard bees work near the entrance and inspect bees trying to enter the colony. They rely heavily on scent to recognize members of their own hive and identify intruders.
A bee from another colony doesn’t automatically gain entry simply because it belongs to the same species. Guards use colony-specific odors to determine whether an arriving bee belongs there.
They also respond to larger threats around the entrance. Guard workers have stingers and release alarm pheromones during defensive behavior, which recruits additional workers when the colony faces danger. This job generally appears later in a worker’s life, shortly before she begins foraging.
Dead bees don’t stay inside an active colony for long. Some workers take on the job of carrying deceased nestmates away from occupied areas of the hive.
A worker detects a dead bee through chemical changes associated with death. She then moves the body out through the entrance and drops it away from the immediate colony area.
Removing dead bees supports sanitation inside a densely populated hive. Thousands of insects occupy a relatively enclosed space, so decomposing bodies would introduce unwanted material around brood cells and food stores. Undertaker behavior keeps that material away from active sections of the colony.
Foraging comes later in a worker bee’s life. These bees leave the colony and travel through the surrounding area in search of nectar or pollen.
Nectar goes into a specialized storage organ known as the honey stomach. After returning home, the forager transfers it to another worker. Bees continue processing the nectar until its moisture content drops enough for storage as honey.
Pollen travels differently. A forager packs it onto structures on her hind legs before flying back to the colony. Inside the hive, pollen supplies protein that supports brood rearing and the nutritional needs of young workers.
Scout bees are foragers that search beyond known feeding areas. When a scout locates a productive patch of flowers, she returns to the colony with information that directs other foragers toward it.
Honey bees communicate some of that information through the waggle dance. The dance’s orientation relates to the direction of the food source compared with the sun. Its movement also communicates information about distance.
Other foragers observe the dance inside the dark hive and use those signals when they leave. This communication allows a colony to direct more workers toward productive areas without requiring every forager to search independently.
Drones are male honey bees, and reproduction is their primary role. They develop from unfertilized eggs, which gives them a different genetic makeup from female workers and queens.
Adult drones leave the colony and gather in areas where they may encounter virgin queens from other hives. A successful mating transfers the drone’s genetic material to the queen, who stores sperm for later egg fertilization.
Drones don’t gather food and don’t have stingers. In colder regions, workers remove them from the colony as winter approaches because mating activity has ended and food becomes more limited.
A honey bee colony depends on different bees performing different jobs as its needs change. The queen supplies new eggs, while workers move through specialized roles during adulthood. Drones carry out the male side of reproduction and connect one colony genetically with another.
Understanding the roles of bees in a hive makes the activity inside the colony much easier to follow. Bees that look nearly identical from outside the hive may be doing completely different work inside it, depending on their sex, age, and stage of adult life.
