COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — St. Louis CITY2 earned two points Saturday night after defeating Colorado Rapids 2, 3-1, in a penalty shootout following a scoreless draw at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park.
Goalkeeper Colin Welsh made three saves during the shootout. Zack Lillington, Chris Pearson and Zach Zengue converted their penalty kicks to secure the win for St. Louis.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw through regulation. Colorado held a 12-9 advantage in total shots and earned six corner kicks to CITY2’s four, but neither side recorded a shot on goal during regulation.

With the shootout victory, CITY2 moved into fifth place in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference standings with 35 points.
Lillington captained the St. Louis side. CITY2 made five substitutions during the match, including Pearson’s entrance in the 81st minute. Pearson later scored in the shootout.
