ST. LOUIS — St. Louis CITY SC announced Friday that it will be receiving up to $725,000 from Toronto FC.
The bulk of that deal involves $500,000 in guaranteed General Allocation Money (GAM) funds. They will be split between the GAM funds for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
The exchange involves the Right of First Refusal for Josh Sargent due to his being a St. Louis regional native.
Sargent, a native of O’Fallon, Missouri, played most of his youth career in St. Louis with Scott Gallagher. He would later move on to IMG Academy and then overseas in Germany with Werder Bremen.
After 12 matches and seven goals on Werder Bremen’s reserve team in 2018, Sargent was promoted to the main squad. In 72 appearances, Sargent scored 13 goals.
Sargent left Werder Bremen in August 2021 to join Premier League side Norwich City on a four-year deal worth reportedly at roughly €9.5 million (roughly $11.2 million). Throughout his time there, he has scored 55 goals in 147 appearances.
A deal between Toronto FC and Norwich City was struck on Friday, with the latter receiving $22 million in the deal. Norwich City may be subject to $5 million in additional compensation if certain incentives are met.
Toronto had started the bidding process for Sargent for $18 million last December.
In addition, CITY SC can receive an additional $225,000 in conditional GAM based on performance incentives.
