Even if your vehicle is sitting in a parking lot, it’s at risk of getting hit. Parking lots are common places for minor fender benders as well as more serious accidents. If you find yourself in a car accident in a parking lot, take these steps to document the scene and plan your next steps.
Check on the safety of any passengers and drivers who may have been injured in the accident. Call 911 for medical attention if you believe anyone was hurt.
If possible, move the affected vehicles out of direct traffic. Finally, turn on your hazards to alert pedestrians and other drivers.
Once everyone is safe, assess the damage to any vehicles involved in the accident. Take note of any external damage. Even the smallest damage could be worth noting for insurance claims or any potential legal proceedings. Also, take photos to help you when you file for insurance.
Although you may be rattled after an accident, make sure to ask for the driver’s information, including their name, phone number, address, license plate number, and insurance policy details.
In some cases, a driver may leave a note with their phone number if they caused a car accident in the parking lot. Contact them later for the details of the event so that you can properly resolve the incident.
You should see plenty of pedestrians walking in and out of restaurants, department stores, or gas stations in large commercial lots. Ask for their contact information and if they would be willing to provide a statement. Their testimony can be a valuable tool that insurance companies rely on to gather additional information.
In more severe wrecks, notify your local authorities about the accident. Filing a police report builds a case for accidents with significant damage or severe injury.
Report the accident to your insurance company. The faster you provide information regarding the event, the sooner your policy can go into effect. Include any photos and witness statements to secure your claim so you can receive the coverage you need.
Next, you’ll need to arrange for vehicle repairs. Delaying repairs for damage such as collision dents could lead to more severe damage. Set aside a budget and keep your insurer informed about the process so that they can provide coverage.
With high degrees of foot and vehicle traffic, parking lots can create a perfect storm for accidents. Equip yourself with the knowledge you need to effectively file claims or testimonies relevant to the accident. With these steps in mind, you can protect yourself and your vehicle from further harm.
