Is your backyard lovely and spacious with enough room to move around in and enjoy it properly? Or is it cramped and cluttered and you long for something bigger and better so you can entertain, relax, and enjoy the outdoors?
If it’s the latter, things might not be as bad as they seem, and with a few changes (some big and some small, so you can decide what you want to do), you can make your backyard feel oh-so-much bigger than it really is (or perhaps just ensure that its size can be seen – it might be hidden away right now).
One effective way to make your backyard feel more spacious is to cut back some or all of the trees you’ve got there. Trees are fantastic and they can make a backyard look stunning, as well as provide shade, so if you’ve got them (or even just one) you probably don’t want to do away with it altogether. However, when the trees are overgrown, those big branches are going to make your backyard feel and look a lot smaller than it is, and you’ll have a lot of space that’s unusable.
When you organize tree lopping, ideally with experts to make it safer and give you a better result, you’ll open things up massively, giving your backyard a lot more light, and even increasing the airflow through it. With more sunlight in your yard and more room to move around, you’ve made it bigger, so this is a brilliant option.
Another excellent way to make your backyard feel bigger is to maximize your vertical space, so you’re using space that would otherwise be wasted and, at the same time (or that’s the idea, anyway), you free up space on the ground, adding to the overall feeling of there being plenty of space in general.
Vertical gardening encompasses a whole load of different things including trellises, wall-mounted planters, and hanging baskets, and if you’ve already got a fence (which you probably will have), that’s a great place to start. As well as the fact that you’re going to be able to make your backyard feel bigger is the fact that you’ll also make it look more interesting, so it’s a good idea for all kinds of reasons.
You might think that dividing your backyard into sections is going to do the opposite of what you want, and rather than make things seem bigger, you’ll make everything much smaller instead. However, that’s not usually the case.
If you’re careful, having different sections can give the illusion of a larger yard – after all, with lots of things in it, but carefully arranged so it’s not full and there’s no clutter, you’ll have loads of space. Some of the sections you could have include relaxation, dining, play, gardening, and so on, and you can do it all just by using plants, outdoor furniture, and even lighting.
