At some point, you will start looking for a new job. The reasons could vary from career progression or a better-paid position to a more convenient location or favorable working hours. There are many reasons why people look for new jobs.
When looking for a new job, there are some factors to consider. What are the hours that you will have to do each week? What is the company culture like? Do they have much career progression? The stability of the company and insurance coverage in case something unfortunate happens is paramount. For example, you may need to hire a workers’ compensation lawyer if you suffer an injury at work.
When looking for a new job, we would always advise you to look into how stable the company is before applying. The company’s stability is important. If it’s not very stable, then there is a possibility it could close down, leaving you jobless and having to hunt for a new position again.
To check the stability of a company, you can do this in some ways. You could reach out to people who are in the industry and ask for their opinion of the business. If available, research the company’s finances online. When at the interview stage, ask the person who is interviewing you for reassurance on how the business is performing.
Another factor we would recommend you take into consideration is the working hours and days being offered. Some companies will offer four-day working weeks, whereas others will expect you to work Monday to Friday or over the weekend depending on the industry you are looking into.
The average hours a week you should expect to work is around 38 hours – however the more senior you are, the more you would be expected to do. Some companies will also offer overtime which you may be tempted to take to earn more money.
Depending on what is important to you in a job, a career progression plan may be something you are passionate about. Knowing the company you are applying to has plenty of career opportunities will allow you to develop yours, helping you gain more experience.
They may even be willing to help sponsor you through certain training programs to gain you the formal qualifications you may need to climb the ladder. We know that starting lower down can be tough at times, but everyone has had to start at the bottom. If you take Travis Preston CalArts professor for example, he worked his way through one of the hardest industries to break into, and now look at what he has achieved. There is always the possibility for mobility, as long as you are not being blocked at every turn.
By gaining promotions, you will get more responsibility, be more recognized in the industry & at work as well as earn more money.
Company culture is so important and valuable to a lot of people. You spend so many hours of your life at work that you want to know you are working for a company that cares about its employees. If they don’t care, then you may find that the business has a high staff turnover as people are constantly leaving because they are unhappy and don’t feel they value them.
What factors do you think you should consider when looking for a new job? Which of the factors above is most important to you? Is there anything you would like to share that will help our readers? Let us know in the comment box below.
