Simplifying an expanding business

There are two basic processes that most people want to improve upon in their businesses: simplification and expansion. On the one hand, you want to keep things as simple as possible in your business at all times. Doing so means that you are going to have an easier time of it and that your business will be simpler to run.

On the other hand, you are probably also keen on constant growth. That is something that many people have as the defining factor in a business.

Looking at the face of it, it can seem as if these two things are diametrically opposed. You would think that in expansion comes more complexity. However, if you approach it properly, you should find that you are able to keep the business simpler even as you expand and grow.

Build on your guiding principles

Before you do any expansion, you might find it helpful to take a look at your own guiding principles, and those of your business itself. See whether these can be improved upon in any way or built up. Doing that can help a great deal. It can enable you to keep your business on the straight and narrow even as you expand it. This is an important thing to be able to do.

Go back to your principles and see whether they are still relevant, or whether they might need updating. You might find that doing this is going to help you to keep your business on the right track in general.

Expand your business slowly

Just because you want to expand doesn’t mean that you need to do it quickly, and in fact you will find that you are going to struggle to do that and keep things simple at the same time. In order to simplify and expand at once, you should ensure that you are not expanding any faster than necessary.

This is something that a lot of business owners actually struggle to do. It is partly because it can be so tempting to simply steam ahead and try and do as much as possible at once. But if you take expansion slower, you will probably find everything to be considerably more manageable. You’ll be able to keep your business simple while it grows.

Getting help at each step

Of course, when you do expand, you might want to keep things simple by ensuring you have the appropriate help on board as you do it. Sometimes it really is true that having some help by your side is all you need in order to ensure that your business is kept simple, so that is something to think about.

Let’s say for instance that you are planning on expanding overseas; for that, you will probably want the help of a customs brokerage team at the border. This kind of assistance means you can keep your business going strong even as you grow it.

Consider getting investors

While there are multiple ways to get funding such as loans, credit cards, selling personal belongings, or asking loved ones for help, one of the best (and least stressful) ways to work towards expanding a business could be through investors.

You could technically talk to loved ones such as friends and family about this. However, it’s usually better to keep loved ones and business completely separate.

If you’re in the food industry, you could even look into food and beverage investors to help you out. There are a lot of programs and even networking events out there to help business owners connect to investors.
