Why Nobody Trusts the News: Isaac Saul Andrew Heaton, Isaac Saul
HILLSBORO — The deadline to make payment on the second installment on Montgomery County property taxes is quickly approaching.
County treasurer Nikki Lohman reminds county real estate taxpayers that the deadline to make the second installment is Friday, Sept. 4. This will also be the final day to pay the first installment without penalty.
Beginning Saturday, Sept. 5, accruing penalties will be calculated into the property tax payments. There will be a 4.5% penalty on the first installment, with a 1.5% penalty on the second installment.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the payment due dates had a 30-day extension from their usual June and August deadlines.
These deadlines are important as delinquency notice mailings will take place on September 14. Listings of property tax delinquencies are published in local newspapers the week of October 5-9.
For property taxes that remain unpaid, October 9 is also the final day to register as a buyer at property tax sales. Substitution filings should be no later than October 16.
However, there is a limited window of time to make the payments. October 1 and 2 are the final listing days for payments, with the latter being the deadline for payments via personal checks.
October 23 will be the very latest day for property tax payments. However, properties with default tax payments will be sold at auction on October 26 at 9 a.m.
Additional payment information and instructions are available on the back of the tax bill. Lohman or her deputy treasurers can also provide some assistance via postal mail or via phone. The mailing address is on the back of the tax bill. The office’s number is (217) 532-9251.
